The One-Minute Version
Cremation insurance is a small whole-life insurance policy. You pay a set monthly premium. When you pass away, the insurance company pays your beneficiary a lump sum. Most plans pay $5,000 to $35,000. Your family uses that money to pay for cremation and anything else they need.
What It Is NOT
It is not a preneed cremation plan. A preneed plan means paying a funeral home now for a set cremation package. Cremation insurance is life insurance. Your family gets cash. They choose where and how to spend it. If they move, or prices change, or they like a different funeral home, the money still works.
Florida note: preneed contracts fall under Florida law (Chapter 497). Sellers need a special preneed license. I sell life insurance. I do not sell preneed contracts.
What Does Cremation Cost in Florida?
Costs vary a lot. A direct cremation costs the least. That means no viewing and no service. Add a viewing, a memorial service, or an urn, and the price rises. A traditional burial with a service most often costs more than cremation. Every funeral home sets its own prices. Prices change over time. How the Money Reaches Your Family
- Your beneficiary files a claim — most often just a form plus a certified death certificate.
- The carrier reviews it — often a matter of days for simple claims.
- The check goes to your beneficiary — not to a funeral home. Your family decides how to spend it.
With a preneed contract, the money sits with one funeral home. With insurance, your family holds the choices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this real insurance?
Yes. It is a real whole-life policy. Florida watches over it like all life insurance. The name just tells you what most people buy it for.
Can I buy cremation insurance for a parent?
You can own a plan on someone else only with their knowledge and consent. They must sign the form and answer the health questions themselves.
What happens if cremation costs less than my plan pays?
Your beneficiary keeps the rest. The money is theirs to use freely.
Does the plan cover cremation anywhere, or only in Florida?
Anywhere. The payout is cash to your beneficiary, who can use any provider in any state.
